Destination Guide
Few cruise departures anywhere start with a view like this: sailing out of Piraeus beneath the hills of Athens, headed for Santorini by morning. Athens is the natural home port for the Greek islands and the Eastern Mediterranean, and more lines are sailing from it every season.
Here's what you can reach from Athens, how to choose between the main itineraries, and the planning details that make the trip effortless.
Most Athens-based itineraries concentrate on the Aegean: Santorini's cliffside villages, Mykonos' windmills and beach clubs, medieval Rhodes, and Crete's pink-sand Elafonissi. Many routes add Kusadasi, the Turkish port gateway to ancient Ephesus — one of the best-preserved classical cities in the world.
Longer sailings range further into the Eastern Mediterranean, reaching the Dalmatian coast and Italy, or looping south to the Holy Land itineraries. The classic 7-night Greek islands run is the most popular balance of sea days and sightseeing.
A round-trip from Athens is the simplest to plan: one flight in, one flight out, and no luggage juggling between hotels. One-way sailings between Athens and Barcelona, Rome, or Venice let you pair two great cities in one trip — ideal for a first Mediterranean visit.
Prefer fewer ports and more time in each? Look for itineraries with late-night departures from Santorini and Mykonos, so you get sunset in the islands rather than a mid-afternoon departure.
Arrive at least a day or two early — the Acropolis, the Plaka neighborhood, and the Acropolis Museum deserve a full day, and an early arrival means a delayed flight can't cost you the ship. Piraeus is about 45–60 minutes from Athens International Airport by taxi or the direct metro.
The best sailing window is May–June and September–October: warm water, thinner crowds, and comfortable temperatures for sightseeing. July and August bring the heat (and the peak-season fares) to the Greek islands.
